Dorset County Museum

Museum exhibits in a shop in a Dorchester shopping Precinct

After one of the most successful exhibitions ever hosted at Dorchester, Dippy on Tour, the Museum is now closed for major refurbishment until the summer of 2020.

A building project, with the support of the Heritage Lottery fund, will transform the museum into Tomorrow’s Museum for Dorset. The Museum will become a leading, contemporary cultural and heritage centre. The Victorian Hall and other existing spaces will be refurbished, and new internal structures will double the Museum’s floorspace.

The building work does not mean the museum collections are closed. Some of the collections will be on the move in the form of a pop up. Its first location, until the end of April 2019, is at Brewery square in Dorchester. Its first theme Brewing. The pop up museum will then move to other locations around the county.

Visit the DCM website to see what collections are being exhibited in which locations around the county in 2019.

The Dippy exhibition and the transformation of the museum with the Heritage Lottery grant has demonstrated that Dorset County museum is not an old fashioned academic institution but a vibrant establishment that the whole community can benefit from. To see the latest events and locations visit
