The 24 Hour Museum beat some big names like Tate and the Science Museum's new Ingenious site to the top spot.
Web User has named the 24 Hour Museum the best museum and gallery website in its November 11 issue.
The government-funded site, Britain's National Virtual Museum, beat a host of top cultural digital destinations to the title, including Tate Online, The National Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
"Naturally we're really thrilled to get this important accolade," said Jon Pratty, Editor of the site since March 2001. "It's also great that the article makes a fuss about recent projects like our new City Heritage Guides." The new sites can be seen at www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/cityheritage
Web User is the UK's best selling internet magazine, published weekly.
Clare Woffenden is News Editor of Web User. She describes the 24 HM site as "a great guide to over 3000 museums, galleries and heritage attractions. The excellent City Heritage Guides offer a fantastic insight into what you can see and do at cities across the UK..."
24 Hour Museum was also named best arts and culture website by Computeractive Web Guide, the other leading UK web publication.
"At a time when the web is growing again as a result of the increase in Broadband connections, cultural guides and virtual museums (like the 24 Hour Museum) that do something socially useful become more and more important," said Jon Pratty, Editor of the site.
