Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions together with a range of events and activities guaranteed to inspire.

Our permanent attractions include a Picture Gallery where you can relax and enjoy the splendour of the Victorians’ passion for painting and the decorative arts, or stroll down the Victorian Street and marvel through shop windows displaying their original 19th century wares.

Salford Museum and Art Gallery was the UK’s ‘first free public library’ and today, still houses the city’s Local History Library and archive. You can research your family history or simply indulge in the rich diversity of the library’s collection 65,000 local photographs.

Our learning and outreach programme allows everyone to get involved with the museum - perhaps taking part in a Victorian washday, learning new crafts or reminiscing with our memory boxes.

The changing contemporary exhibitions, history events and activities programme, completes a must visit experience for individuals, families, schools and organisations to come and enjoy.

A-Z of Salford's Collections - exhibition

  • 31 March 2019 — 23 February 2020 *on now

Many art galleries now have wide-ranging collections and every gallery organizes them in a slightly different way. Often factors like the date when they were made, the country they were made in, the artistic styles they play with or the subject matter they portray are used to group and place different paintings. This can provide a great understanding of that date or style, but not necessarily of the history of the gallery or the range of art in the area.

Salford Museum and Art Gallery, which is operated by Salford Community Leisure, has found a simple way to change that, with the new exhibition, A -Z.

It’s just what it sounds like, an A to Z, an alphabet of objects and artworks from across the collections. Some pieces are well-known, others have only rarely been displayed. For everyone, there should be something new to discover.

Each section of the collection has been explored to share some intriguing items; from paintings and decorative art, to costume and social history. Do you know how Victorian gentlemen protected their moustaches from tea? Did you know we hold a monarch’s pair of stockings in the collections – but whose? Visit the exhibition to find out!
