Coventry Transport Museum to transform Old Grammar School with £4.6 million

By Culture24 Reporter | 02 April 2013

Within a honk of Coventry's acclaimed Transport Museum, the 12th Century Old Grammar School has remained unused since the 1980s. But this Grade I-listed building, named on English Heritage's at risk register, is about to become a driving force at the centre of a £4.6 million community project.

Having won the grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, organisers say they will create a “world-class experience” around the existing site. The School will be used for exhibitions, events and education activities, overseen by the museum.

“Coventry’s transport heritage and the Old Grammar School are highly valued by people locally, nationally and internationally,” says Gary Hall, the museum’s Chief Executive, who believes both venues will stand at the “beating heart” of the city.

“This funding will allow us to both save a unique and historically significant building, and tell our city’s story in an innovative museum.

“When the work is completed in 2015, the new facilities will combine with a revitalised programme of activities, while also shouting about our city across the globe.

“We invite the world to come and discover it for themselves.”

Originally outlined a year ago, the plans aim to engage 30,000 people in heritage, learning and community activities.
