Three new Waterloo paintings from the National Army Museum join the VanGoYourself website for Waterloo200
The National Army Museum has added three Waterloo paintings from its collection to the VanGoYourself website in time for Waterloo200, the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo.

The website, which has been developed by Culture24 in partnership with Plurionet in Luxemburg, challenges people to recreate, remix and rediscover wonderful works of art from gallery collections like the Rijksmuseum, the National Gallery of Denmark and the National Gallery of Ireland.
Since 2014 hundreds of art lovers have donned fake beards, grabbed makeshift props and cajoled family, friends and pets for lively reinterpretations of everything from paintings of Henry VIII and Vincent Van Gogh to canoodling couples and the Last Supper.
Now with the addition of the National Army Museum paintings VanGoYourself visitors have the chance to mark the Bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo by attempting the imperious gaze of the First Duke of Wellington captured by Peter Edward Stroehling in 1820, or by reproducing John Cawse’s, charming painting of a Waterloo soldier relating his exploits in a tavern.
Any recreations will be paired with the original and published on the site in the Vago'd gallery.
A third new addition, Denis Dighton’s 1815 watercolour depicting the desperate defence of the Chateau de Hougoumont by the Coldstream Guards, may require a little more thought and planning – perhaps even a Napoleonic re-enactment group – to execute. But, says Culture24 Director Jane Finnis, the three lively paintings “encapsulate what VanGoYourself is all about”.

“We want to free up more paintings of all types and genres from collections right across Europe so people can engage with them in all kinds of ways,” she said.
“So I’m delighted that the National Army Museum has come on board with three wonderful and very different paintings in time for the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo .”
The new additions come as Culture24 launches a crowdfunding campaign to enable more artworks from museums and galleries across Europe to be uploaded onto the VanGoYourself website.
The new campaign, at Goteo,org.uk rewards pledges with a range of incentives including the chance to become a named sponsor of individual artworks - including the three newly added Waterloo paintings.
A variety of pledges are available, starting at just £5. People can also show their support in non-monetary ways by sharing and advocating for VanGoYourself via social media.
