We're here because we're here: Jeremy Deller's Somme tribute in pictures

| 04 July 2016

Among the Somme Centenary tributes this weekend, Jeremy Deller's ghostly tribute to the fallen was one of the strangest yet most affectingly human. Here's how his project, 'were here because we're here', for 14-18NOW played out across Britain

Occasionally breaking into the fatalistic First World War soldier's song, 'We're here because we're here, Deller's project led to interventions in the furthest reaches of the UK.

I saw this is Folkestone, beautiful and very ghostly, and moving an apt reminder of how young the "men" were who gave their lives, and of how who and where we are now is dependent on them , and the debt we owe and the losses we had.
