Loss, Rediscovery and Rearrangement

  • 6 April — 16 June 2019

Romilly Saumarez Smith is a jeweller who specialises in transformation. She trawls eBay to find metal detecting items and other lost treasures to create her works which become sometimes detailed and sumptuous, and sometimes quite simple.

The exhibition has three parts; a display of rings, a case with objects and boxes and, on the walls, tree handles which are made from antique and vintage cutlery.

Her works will be shown alongside her selection of miniature portraits from The Portland Collection.

Artwork by Sylvie Franquet

reCollecting

  • 6 April — 16 June 2019

Belgian artist Franquet has drawn inspiration from the huge variety of objects collected by the Dukes of Portland, in particular by Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, the second Duchess of Portland.

A multimedia collage artist, a re-collector, Franquet’s fine art practice spans needlework, textile and rock sculpture, collage and sewn herbariums. Franquet combines classical imagery with a punk aesthetic and with research into Welbeck’s historic art collection.
