England, Russia, Germany and Greece provide stars in World Cups Twitter special

Museums have revealed a few exhibits as historic as the Jules Rimet trophy on the opening day of the World Cup

This example from Russia was carved in 1882 and was left to the Horniman collection in 1907 by a Captain Telfer.

It is a deep wooden cup with a short pedestal. The lower sides of the cup are decorated with an incised dot design. Its handle is particularly intricate.

This brass object is a replica of a gold cup found in a tomb at the ancient site of Vaphio, Greece.

The original is from the late Minoan period, and is roughly 3,500 years old.

It is a replica brass Vaphio cup with an angular handle bolted in place. The raised decoration depicts a prancing bull.

Engraved Horn from England© Horniman Museum and Gardens
This piece of horn has been hollowed out and carefully engraved with a classic English hunting scene.

It dates from the 18th or 19th century.

This is one of several moustache-protecting cups held by the Museum of English Rural Life at the University of Reading.

The porcelain collection largely dates from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
