Museums at Night seems to have inspired a Sunday with a difference at venues across the country, not least at Coughton Court in Warwickshire, where you can return to 1910 for a dinner party with the man and mistress of the house.

A "shadowy journey" chancing upon frazzled servants and abandoned dining tables, the experience promises a new look at the ancient house.

Take to the cockpit for a Flight Simulator Convention at The Helicopter Museum in Weston-Super-Mare

Speaking of experiences, the Helicopter Museum in Weston-Super-Mare is hosting a Flight Simulator Convention, featuring 50 simulators allowing you to control and manoeuvre helicopters, fighter jets and passenger airlines from the cockpit, accompanied by real helicopters landing and taking off from helipads.

If your preferred method of transport is a more grounded one, head for the Ingrow Railway Centre in West Yorkshire, where volunteers will be explaining how they've helped contribute to dozens of television programmes and films about vintage railways in a special late opening.

Get a more murderous view of Ham House in Surrey

Steam engines are as quintessentially English as that other great institution, the pie and pea supper. Visit the Magna Science Centre in Rotherham for a slap-up serving of the classic dinner, preceded by a tour of the vast steelworks in the company of a former steelworker.

One of the best aspects of this year’s campaign has been the diversity of the events held – you can embark on intrepid plant hunting adventures down at the leafy Topsham Museum in Exeter, solve a 400-year-old murder mystery at Surrey's Ham House, witness an evening of dance, short films and live performances at the Viewfinder Gallery in London or enjoy Dream Home, the voyeuristic, walk-through interactive art show at the Phoenix Gallery in Brighton.

Norwich Cathedral is part of the Norwich 12 roster of historic venues taking part in Museums at Night

There are talks on astronomy and guided tours as the sun sets from the ramparts at the Redoubt Fortress in Eastbourne, where experts will be exploring the exhibits and their surroundings alongside stargazing tips from the Eastbourne Astronomical Society.

Other late-night tours to catch include the Bellingham Heritage Centre in Northumberland, the Grade II-listed Carshalton Water Towerand the excellent Norwich 12 alliance of atmospheric, historic venues.
