Innovative project aims to produce masterplan for the way art galleries are interpreted

A handbook on explaining exhibitions will be issued to art galleries as part of the Interpretation Matters campaign

In a call for opinions on the way art galleries are interpreted, an Arts Council-backed project will be holding a series of workshops with art fans and curators ahead of the publication of a book on the subject.

Aimed at an “interested-in-art” audience, Interpretation Matters has won funding for its bid to improve the way exhibitions are explained. The first public meeting will take place at the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea tomorrow (April 8 2014), with a follow-up planned for the Bluecoat in Liverpool, where an interactive text exhibition, Are you Talking to Me?, will also pursue the views of visitors.

“There was so much national and international interest when I launched the Interpretation Matters website in 2013,” says Dany Louise, the Project Director, who plans to introduce audience voxpops for galleries and a special Call to Action kit.

“It’s brilliant to be able to continue and develop the project into its next stage.

“I’ve created more ways for people to participate, so if you are a gallery visitor you can share your textual experiences via the website.”

Participants will have the chance to add their thoughts to an official Handbook issued by the project to advise venue staff.
