18th-century mansion with fine interiors and walled garden.
York’s ‘country house and garden’, this imposing Georgian mansion was built in 1716 and contains one of the most impressive baroque interiors in England. Exceptional wood carving, an unusual central corridor running the full length of the house and over 100 portraits on loan from the National Portrait Gallery can be seen.

There is also a fully equipped Victorian laundry, delightful walled garden and interesting sculptures in wood.

Most rooms have no electric light. Visitors wishing to make a close study of the interior and portraits should avoid dull days early and late in the season.

A series of building and development works will at times affect the external appearance of the house in 2005.

From Rural Idyll to Perilous Skies

1 March — 3 November 2013 *on now

“It has been said that if only walls had ears, and a tongue to speak; what tales they could repeat…”

In 1941, Lady Chesterfield, former owner, moved out of the Hall as it was requisitioned for RAF Linton on Ouse SNCO bomber crew and later the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Seventy years on from opening its doors as a billet and mess to the Royal Canadian Air Force, we remember some of the poignant and amazing tales and histories of the men and women who stayed at Beningbrough during the Second World War in a new cross-site exhibition and trail, as well as events and activities.
