  • The Flying Scotsman Story
  • When the Great Northern Railway launched its Flying Scotsman service in 1862 it would have had little idea that it was launching a legend. Over 140 years later Flying Scotsman is still racing between London and Edinburgh, whilst the locomotive named after this famous train has won the hearts fot he nation. Savour the atmosphere, meet the people and see the objects that make up the Flying Scotsman Story. Please note Flying Scotsman is currently undergoing a statutory overhaul in the Workshop. Once Upon a Tide – North Sea Ferry Tales

This new exhibition, in partnership with the National Railway Museum in the Netherlands, will use the Museum’s rich poster collections to explore the past, present and future of the Harwich-Hook ferry route. Explore the personal recollections of travellers throughout over 100 years of North Sea crossings from back-packers to fine dining and family holidays. Don’t miss the chance to walk onto the deck of a ‘roll-on roll-off ferry’ as you see the turntable as you have never experienced it before!

Great Western Railway Reflections

This free new exhibition celebrates the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Great Western Railway. The displays take a sideways look at the GWR through the nicknames by which it was known and showcases the NRM’s collections of small objects, posters and paintings relating to the GWR.

Steam Sundays!

30 August 2009 — 26 July 2209 *on now

Don't miss the chance to ride on the steam star, Olton Hall which can be recognised from its star appearances in the popular Warner Bros-produced series of Harry Potter films. Special steam rides will be available in the South Yard each Sunday between 26 July to 30 August 2009 from 10.15 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 16.30. The locomotive will also be on static display at the NRM during the week.
A small charge for steam rides applies: Adults £1.00, Children (16 and under) 50p and Under 2's free. All dates and timings are provisional and subject to confirmation. Future Rail

Join us for a special season of talks and debates exploring the issues affecting the future of the rail industry and future rail travel. This will include exploring possibilities for high speed travel, climate change and changing passenger experiences. It will be accompanied by family learning activities and futuristic science shows.
