In the early 1980s, an idea was conceived to build a new transport museum in response to the serious overcrowding and lack of interpretation in the original museum, which was first opened in 1925 by Hull’s first Curator, Thomas Sheppard.
In 1987 work began on the first of five phases to build the Streetlife Museum of Transport; a project that was initially funded by Hull City Council and the European Regional Development Fund. As the phases were built the Heritage Lottery Fund began to fund the construction and, in 2002, the galleries were installed and Streetlife was finally complete.
Visitors are now able to experience a first-class collection of transport exhibits, from trams to tricycles. The award-winning galleries allow visitors to sample the sights, sounds and smells of 200 years of transport history and guarantee a fun day out for families, groups, individuals and enthusiasts.
Part of the Designated Collections of national importance relating to the city and region of Kingston upon Hull are on display here.
