Martin Creed ARTIST ROOMS On Tour

8 June — 6 October 2013

The Ferens is pleased to be the first associate gallery to host the Martin Creed ARTIST ROOM. The exhibition will show important works by Creed, who first came to prominence when he won the Turner Prize in 2001 with Work No.227 The Lights going on and off.

Creed is a conceptual artist and musician whose works often excite controversy by challenging our ideas about what art is. He has exhibited extensively worldwide and is renowned for his straightforward approach to making art, often using simple materials to create sculptures, installations, drawings, films, music and text. His work can be refreshing, unexpected and humorous, as well as provocative.

The exhibition will explore a range of different media including a neon sign Work No. 890 (DON’T WORRY), a twenty-one part drawing, Work No.944, 2008, and a series of four paintings from 2011.

ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is an inspired partnership with Arts Council England and the Art Fund - making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK. ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments.

Going Dutch- Hull and the Low Countries

28 September 2013 — 5 January 2014

In keeping with Hull City Council’s Welcoming the World international theme this exciting exhibition looks at the shared culture between Hull and the Low Countries through the ages. Throughout the city and surrounding landscape, Dutch influence can be seen. Trading links go back as far as the thirteenth century and in the 1920s over half the fruit and vegetables imported into Britain from the Netherlands came in via Hull. From art and architecture to the greenhouses in Cottingham, this exhibition explores ties with our friends across the North Sea.

This resource about using art in galleries as a starting point for cross curricular work has some useful tips: choose a work large enough for a whole class to explore together in the gallery, take a risk - children are fantastic at making their own interpretations of both contemporary and historical artwork, look for unexpected curriculum links.
