Knaresborough Castle Summer Events

Summer Events at Knaresborough Castle

  • 26 July — 14 September 2014 *on now

Pay a visit to Knaresborough Castle this summer for a great day out. With a fabulous summer events programme planned there are activities to suit all ages and abilities. Knaresborough Castle is set in a stunning location towering over the River Nidd, originally built on the site 900 years ago and remaining a Royal Castle to this day. Its one of the North’s most impressive castles with the beautiful King’s Tower, dry moat and walls with 12 towers.

There is plenty to discover at Knaresborough Castle, including the remains of the King’s Tower with its dungeon and garderobe. Join a tour to scurry through the sallyport, a secret underground tunnel out of the castle and see the rare surviving Tudor Courtroom in the museum whilst imagining the crimes of the past. Other activities at the Castle include putting and bowling (small cost applies). Events take place in the Castle, museum or grounds at usual admission charges unless stated otherwise.

Locked Up - Heritage Open Day

Locked Up - Heritage Open Day

  • 14 September 2014 11am-4pm

Explore Ripon’s three museums free of charge as part of the Heritage Open Day Festival. This year’s theme is ‘LOCKED UP”: explore what it meant to be shut in behind the high walls and bars of Ripon’s infamous institutions. Visit the Prison & Police Museum to see how Ripon policing has changed through time and then get face to face with some gruesome historic punishments. Discover the Courthouse Museum where convicts would have been found guilty and awaited their sentence and visit the Workhouse Museum; many poor Victorian families turned to it when there was nowhere else to go but not everyone would leave.
