York Minster provides a wealth of history for you to discover. The Minster itself is an architectural masterpiece and a treasure house of stained glass. It is a living community of Christian worship where the sound of choral music has lifted the spirits of visitors and pilgrims for centuries.

We want you to enjoy your visit and make the most of your time here. Come and experience the beauty of the Quire and the Chapter House.

Gaze from the top of the Central Tower, across the pinnacles and gargoyles of the Minster, looking out onto the medieval streets of historic York and to the countryside beyond.

Opening hours

The Minster is open daily for early services from 7.00am and usually closes at 6.30pm.

For sightseeing in the Minster:
Mon - Sat: 9.00am (9.30am November- March) - last entry 5.00pm Sunday: 12.00noon - 3.45pm

No sightseeing on Good Friday and Easter Sunday or on Sundays before 12.00noon.

Guided tours can be arranged for visiting groups, and in a number of different languages. Please contact us at groups@yorkminster.org at least 28 days in advance of your visit to arrange a guided tour. Admission charges

Charges are made for those visiting for sightseeing purposes. No charges are made for those who wish to enter the Minster to pray or light a candle. Please ask a member of staff on arrival.

It costs £20,000 a day for the building's upkeep and we have had to introduce an entry charge to maintain this holy and historic building. We trust you understand why we have had to take this step.

The charges are:

Entry into the Minster (optional free guided tour) including entry to the Undercroft, Treasury & Crypt
Adult: £9.00
Senior (60+)/student: £8.00
Children with family (16 and under): Free

Entry to the Tower:
Adult: £5.50
Senior (60+)/student: £4.50
Child (age 8 to 16): £3.50
Children under the age of 8 may not climb the Tower

Photography including camcorders, for personal use, is free.
Photographs are not permitted to be taken in the Undercroft.

Walk in the footsteps of Roman soldiers; discover dramatic events that threatened the very existence of York Minster; and explore the lives of the people, past and present, who have made this one of the greatest cathedrals in the world.

Within underground chambers beneath York Minster, dynamic new audiovisual and interactive galleries will reveal the significance behind the cathedral’s most treasured artefacts as never before, in an inspirational, two thousand-year heroic, historic and human journey.

The Great West window of York Minster

Art in York Minster

27 May — 7 June 2013

Over 15 of the region’s most talented artists display personal works inspired by York Minster. The artists include Jake Atree, whose work has been exhibited in London, New York and Germany. On the evening of 7th June at 7.30pm, the paintings will be auctioned in the North Transept to raise money for the conservation and restoration of York Minster. Kings Screen at York Minster

Family Art Day: 'Meeting the Kings'

1 June 2013

Join Artist Jake Attree for a fun-filled workshop exploring the Kings Screen. The session will include an introduction to the artist’s own work, followed by sketching time at the Kings Screen to then develop into your own life sized King! All materials will be provided.

As well as being a full time professional painter, Jake has worked extensively with a wide range of groups of people of all ages and abilities, from degree courses to primary schools. His aim with the family art day is that participants have a rich and enjoyable experience and leave feeling they can draw a little better than when they arrived.

£5 per participant. Normal admission charges apply. Ages 7+. Children to be accompanied by an adult.

A brand new Festival which showcases the astonishing range and versatility of this giant instrument – if you thought you knew what an organ sounded like, think again! York Minster own musicians, featuring some of the country’s top young performers, and guests perform entertaining and popular tunes perfect for promenading. Performing within the Nave itself, you can see the organist in action and even ask questions.

Music connoisseurs can also hear the Organ in special evening recitals on Summer Saturdays in August, part of a tradition of musicianship at York Minster that spans a millennium.
