Burton Constable Hall is set in 300 acres of natural parkland landscaped by Capability Brown and has been the home of the Constable family for over 400 years. This truly hidden gem offers unrivalled access to more than 30 rooms and its interiors of faded grandeur are filled with collections of exquisite furniture, paintings and sculpture, a library of 5,000 books and a remarkable 18th century ‘cabinet of curiosities', which contains fossils, natural history specimens and the most important collection of scientific instruments to be found in any country house.

Getting there

The route is clearly marked by Historic House signs. From Beverley (14m) follow A1035 Bridlington road, turn right at White Cross roundabout then follow A165 towards Hull and follow Historic House signs from Skirlaugh.
From Hull (10m) follow A1033 towards Hedon and turn left at Saltend roundabout then follow signs to Preston and Sproatley and follow Historic House signs.

Additional info

The Hall is disabled friendly with wheelchair loan and stairlift to the first floor (maximum 2 people at any one time). Wheelchair loan is also available for the grounds. Surfaces both inside and outside may be uneven and the paths/walkways are mainly gravel

As East Yorkshire’s best kept secret this truly hidden gem is set in 300 acres of natural parkland landscaped by Capability Brown and has been the home of the Constable family for over 400 years. With unrivalled access to more than 30 rooms and its interiors of faded grandeur are filled with collections of exquisite furniture, paintings and sculpture, a library of 5,000 books and a remarkable 18th century ‘cabinet of curiosities'. Our Tea Room is opens at 11am serving morning coffees, light lunches and delicious afternoon teas all freshly prepared and baked on the premises or you could bring your own picnic and relax on the lawns and play draughts or croquet by the Orangery. The more energetic could use our outdoor trails to explore our magnificent parkland, pastures and wildfowl lakes

and uncover the fascinating Constable family histories and characters over the last 450 years. Visit the stable lad's bedchamber, blacksmith's shop, tack rooms and the restored workings of the 18th century stable clock. The Burton Constable Whale, Yes, that's right we have a whale! Visitors can discover the skeleton of the 60-foot monster that stranded on the coast nearby in 1825 and is featured in the famous novel Moby Dick, now restored and lurking in the Stable Block.

Museums at Night: Spooky Late Night Opening

  • 30 October 2015 5:30-9pm

This Elizabethan mansion can be a spooky place at night. Many of our visitors have reported the ghost of Dame Margaret Constable as she walks down the Long Gallery. Others have had encounters with a nun and one volunteer even chased a black labrador up the stairs, only to watch him disappear. Join us for a late night spooky opening, you never know who you might meet!
