Barley Hall is a stunning medieval house, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Until the 1980s the house was hidden under the relatively modern facade of a derelict office block. Only when the building was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval building discovered and its history uncovered.

Explore York in the time of Henry VIII at our Power and Glory exhibition. Discover the archaeology, first-hand accounts of life in the city and the effects that this greatest of Tudor monarchs had on life in York during his thirty-eight year reign.

Plus, exclusive to Barley Hall: experience ix sumptuous costumes from the smash-hit BBC2 series, Wolf Hall, including items worn by Claire Foy and Mark Rylance.

Wolf Hall Comes To York

Barley Hall’s ‘Power & Glory’ exhibition is now home to some of the most beautiful costumes from the smash hit BBC series, Wolf Hall.

Adapted from the international bestseller by Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall chronicles the rise of Thomas Cromwell, son of humble blacksmith, who becomes the right hand of the most powerful man in England, Henry VIII.

Explore the complex relationships of court life in Tudor England, where love, lust and politics mixed together creating chaos for the nation. Discover how Cromwell’s machinations allowed for the annulment of one of Henry’s marriage leading to the English church’s divorce from Rome.

Cromwell’s rise and fall was swift, with his execution taking place on the day of Henry’s wedding to his fifth wife, Catherine Howard, so experience the majesty of six of the costumes used in the series and make yourself at home at Barley Hall.

Body Snatchers – A Talk by Colin Shepherd

Discover the hidden history behind the shady practice of providing cadavers to anatomists during the Middle Ages up to the birth of the Industrial Revolution.

Explore the dubious morals and lucrative business behind this macabre industry as well as the extent of the involvement of the citizens of York at this truly dramatic talk.

Please note: due to the graphic nature of this talk we would advise attendees should be 12 years and over. A cash bar will be available serving a range of hearty beers, fine wines and a selection of soft drinks.

There’s something strange going on this Halloween at Barley Hall and we need intrepid visitors to help us solve some ghostly mysteries!

Sightings of former residents who lived and worked at the Hall over 500 years ago have been seen skulking round the rooms and passageways, causing all sorts of mischief and mayhem. It’s as if the past is coming back to life!

A perfect Halloween event for the kids, expect thrills and chills but no nightmares! Suitable for 5 to 12 year olds.

Admission includes a gift bag for each child. Tours start every 30 minutes.
