At JORVIK Viking Centre travel back 1000 years and visit the Vikings of JORVIK. Explore York's Viking history exactly where our archaeologists found the remains of the original Viking-Age City of 'Jorvik'. Journey through the reconstruction of Viking-Age streets as they would have been in the year 975AD. See over 800 of the items discovered on site and meet the famous JORVIK Vikings in our three exciting exhibitions.

Due to health and safety regulations, only one wheelchair user can be in JORVIK at any one time. Wheelchair users should book in advance to avoid having to wait by calling our Reservations department on 01904 615505.

Everything in JORVIK Viking Centre is based on archaeological evidence unearthed during the Coppergate excavations undertaken between 1979 and 1981 by York Archaeological Trust. Archaeologists started digging on the site of an old sweet factory and unearthed remains of 10th century Viking-age buildings that were surrounded by moist, spongy layers of earth similar to that of a peat bog. In total an incredible 40,000 objects were uncovered by excavating 36,000 layers and sieving 8 tonnes of soil!

JORVIK Viking Festival returns in 2016!

32nd JORVIK Viking Festival

Recognised as the largest event of its kind in Europe, the annual JORVIK Viking Festival is a city-wide celebration of York’s rich Viking heritage.

In 2016, York celebrates a week-long commemoration of the millennial anniversary of the crowning of Canute, the Viking warrior who rose up to be not just King of England, but leader of the North Sea Empire!

With an exciting programme of events inspired by this Norse monarch on offer, including living history encampments, talks and of course dramatic combat performances there is something for everyone at JORVIK Viking Festival.
