At JORVIK Viking Centre travel back 1000 years and visit the Vikings of JORVIK. Explore York's Viking history exactly where our archaeologists found the remains of the original Viking-Age City of 'Jorvik'. Journey through the reconstruction of Viking-Age streets as they would have been in the year 975AD. See over 800 of the items discovered on site and meet the famous JORVIK Vikings in our three exciting exhibitions.

Due to health and safety regulations, only one wheelchair user can be in JORVIK at any one time. Wheelchair users should book in advance to avoid having to wait by calling our Reservations department on 01904 615505.

Everything in JORVIK Viking Centre is based on archaeological evidence unearthed during the Coppergate excavations undertaken between 1979 and 1981 by York Archaeological Trust. Archaeologists started digging on the site of an old sweet factory and unearthed remains of 10th century Viking-age buildings that were surrounded by moist, spongy layers of earth similar to that of a peat bog. In total an incredible 40,000 objects were uncovered by excavating 36,000 layers and sieving 8 tonnes of soil!

The JORVIK Medieval Festival comes to take Yorkshire back to the Middle Ages each Summer. Try your hand as an eagle-eyed archer, discover mighty birds of prey with falconry demonstrations, see brave knights battle in thrilling re-enactments and spend the day in some of Yorkshire’s most idyllic settings. With an exciting programme of events and activities on offer; from interesting talks and lectures on subjects from battle wounds inflicted in the Middle Ages to the re-discovery of Richard III to family-friendly including ‘Medieval Merriment’ at atmospheric Knaresbourgh Castle and the historic Merchant Adventurers’ Hall as well as our themed ‘Little Diggers’ session at DIG you are sure to find something to keep you entertained this August.

Medieval Merriment

A fun-packed day that the whole family will enjoy, in the heart of historic York!
Featuring a host of medieval crafts and activities including; Have-a-Go Archery, Sword Fighting Workshops.

The Plague Doctor will be in residence at the hall, ready to diagnose any ailment and offer a terrifyingly medieval cure – for the right price, of course!

With Bird of Prey displays, fun crafts and themed activities on offer throughout the day this is going to be a day of Medieval Merriment for all!
