At JORVIK Viking Centre travel back 1000 years and visit the Vikings of JORVIK. Explore York's Viking history exactly where our archaeologists found the remains of the original Viking-Age City of 'Jorvik'. Journey through the reconstruction of Viking-Age streets as they would have been in the year 975AD. See over 800 of the items discovered on site and meet the famous JORVIK Vikings in our three exciting exhibitions.

Due to health and safety regulations, only one wheelchair user can be in JORVIK at any one time. Wheelchair users should book in advance to avoid having to wait by calling our Reservations department on 01904 615505.

Everything in JORVIK Viking Centre is based on archaeological evidence unearthed during the Coppergate excavations undertaken between 1979 and 1981 by York Archaeological Trust. Archaeologists started digging on the site of an old sweet factory and unearthed remains of 10th century Viking-age buildings that were surrounded by moist, spongy layers of earth similar to that of a peat bog. In total an incredible 40,000 objects were uncovered by excavating 36,000 layers and sieving 8 tonnes of soil!

Eoforwic Coach Tour: Visit to Scrayingham and Stamford Bridge

Join your guide from York Archaeological Trust for this visit to the church of Saints Peter and Paul, Scrayingham, identified as recently as 2009 as incorporating fabric built before the end of the 8th century.
Your visit to this picturesque location on the banks of the Derwent will be followed by a brief stop in Stamford Bridge, the site of one of the decisive battles of 1066.

Outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear recommended. Some walking / road crossings will be involved.

Behind the Scenes at York Archaeological Trust

  • 16 June 2015 10:30am-3:30pm

This one-hour tour of the premises will highlight some of the processes that go on behind the scenes, and will give visitors the chance to see and handle some archaeological treasures not currently on public display.

Tours begin at 10:30 & 14:30. Suitable for over 12s. Price includes hot drink refreshment.

Please be advised that there is no parking on site: the 5, 5A, 13 and 13A bus routes from York are recommended.

Researching and Representing the Early Medieval: the 2015 Richard Hall Symposium

But where do we stand in 2015? In what ways do current and future research opportunities threaten to overturn long-held notions surrounding the early medieval period, and how are the findings represented and manifested outside the research community?

This conference will bring together heritage professionals and researchers in such related fields as archaeology and public history to explore a range of current themes in early medieval research, as well as the impacts of this research in the public sphere.

Tickets include morning/afternoon refreshments and lunch.
