The collections at Kelham Island Museum cover industries in Sheffield from 1750 up to the present. Major collections include the Iron & Steel Industry Collection, Cutlery Industry Collection, Armament Industry Collection and the Tool Making Industry Collection. There are also collections of Historic Photographs and Documents relating to a variety of Sheffield firms. The library contains many technical metallurgical reference books and is available by appointment.

War Work - Sheffield Industry and the First World War Exhibition

'War Work’ tells the story of the impact of war upon the companies, manufacturing and workers of Sheffield’s industry through objects and documents from the city’s collections. From the products that fed the guns of the nation’s war machine, to the personal stories of the city’s workers, this exhibition explores industry in the Steel City during the World’s first global conflict.

Sheffield Remembers

Sheffield Remembers – War Memorials from the First World War

  • 9 November — 31 December 2014

A new display of war memorials from the Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust collection will be exhibited as part of the First World War centenary commemorations.

The memorials honour the men from the industrial companies of Sheffield, who served or lost their lives during the 1914-1918 conflict.

Exploring the themes of war and industry, commemoration and remembrance, visitors can learn about the symbolism of memorials as well as discovering the personal stories of soldiers from the City.

In the ‘My War Story’ section visitors are invited to add their own stories to the display.

8th 'Down by the Riverside' & Sheffield, Made Metal Market

Event attractions include riverside walks and talks, family heritage activities and local/community history stalls as well as the chance to meet reptiles, mammals and minibeasts. The event also features live music, taster sessions at Sheffield City Kayak Club and food and craft stalls.

Easter at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

Visit Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet this Easter Sunday to take part in our crafty Hamlet Easter Egg trail!

Hidden around the Hamlet will be our Easter Eggs, made by members of the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet community. There will be textile eggs, print eggs, biscuit eggs and knitted eggs to name a few! It’s your job to find them all and unscramble the word they are trying to spell. There will be an Easter treat for children taking part, and a chance to enter our prize draw to win a cuddly Easter Bunny and Easter Egg.

The Easter Egg trail is suitable for children of all ages, and is free as part of the usual entry fee (Adults £4 | Concessions £3 | Accompanied children U16 free)

Traditional Crafts & Skills Weekend

  • 10 — 11 May 2014 10am-4pm

Abbeydale’s historic workshops will come to life with demonstrations of forging and grinding, and there will be stalls of artists and local producers with goods for sale.

Other traditional crafts and skills on show will be iron smelting, wood turning, lace making, spinning and metal working, with Abbeydale’s resident potter and glass maker opening up their workshops for the weekend.

There will be community stalls, including our very own Abbeydale Haberdashers, and live music throughout the day. Our cafe will be open for drinks and snacks, and Whirlow Hall Farm will be barbequing.
