An exhibition exploring how clothes and style have been effected by war - from the clothes worn by those on the home front to the designers’ love of the military look.
Each year the fashion press, without failure, picks out the ‘military look’ as a must have style. This exhibition explores the history of this look, showcasing uniform inspired fashions from the Napoleonic Wars (1803 - 1815) up to the present day, with an Alexander McQueen coat from the Autumn/Winter 2012 collection.
Discover how the catastrophic events of both the First and Second World War impacted on peoples’ lives in everyway. Learn how clothes became simpler both out of necessity and also as a symbol of patriotism. Women in particular saw changes to their fashions as many took up new roles, to fill the gaps left by the men who were sent off to fight. Skirts became shorter for practical reasons and for those women working in the factories or on the land, skirts were replaced altogether by trousers.
Wartime restrictions and material shortages also had a huge impact on fashion. See how the British Government encouraged ideas of ‘Make Do and Mend’ and also examples of Second World War ‘Utility Scheme’ fashions.
