The collection of Archaic Chinese bronzes at Compton Verney is a Designated Collection of national importance.

The 79 Archaic Chinese bronzes from the Shang, Zhou and Han Dynasties (1500-206 BC), with additional, later, bronze-shaped objects made from ceramic and cloisonné, make up an important collection. These objects, associated with ancestor worship, are the chief testimony to the earliest artistic and technological achievements of the Chinese. The earliest pottery vessel in the collection dates back to the Neolithic period (4500-2000 BC).

Compton Verney is also home to a growing collection of nationally and internationally significant art from around the world. The collections include paintings from Naples (1600-1800), Northern European, British Portraits, Chinese, British Folk Art and the Marx Lambert Collection.

Floursack made by the USA and sent to Belgium in WWI

From Ammunition to Art: Trench Art from the First World War

  • 15 July — 14 December 2014

As part of a national programme to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War, this display showcases objects from a Warwickshire-based private collection of Trench Art. Trench Art is a term used to describe objects made from the by-products of 20th and 21st century warfare, but is most widely associated with the First World War. This fascinating display includes decorated shell cases, carved sections of a propeller, rifle cartridges and embroidered flour sacks from the USA to occupied Belgium. These folk art objects were created by servicemen, civilians and prisoners of war from over 20 countries and are a reminder of the global scale of the conflict.

Image of August Rodins, Adam and Henry Moores, Reclining Figure

Moore Rodin

  • 15 February — 31 August 2014 *on now

In the grounds
Enjoy 11 large scale works which complement, challenge and create new perspectives to vistas ‘Capability’ Brown formed in the 1760s. Amongst these amazing pieces is one of Rodin’s most famous works, Monument to the Burghers of Calais (usually on display outside the Houses of Parliament), Moore’s magnificent monumental Three Piece Sculpture: Vertebrae and The Arch.

Inside the galleries
Gain an amazing insight into the works of these two artists. Explore the parallels between their treatment of the figure through a beautiful collection of drawings and models made for larger works. See a special display curated by Moore’s daughter Mary which reveals both artists as keen collectors of antiquities and found objects which profoundly influenced their work. The final treat is a display of rarely seen archival documents and photographs taken by Henry Moore revealing that …as time has gone on, my admiration for Rodin has grown and grown.
