Shape Up!

We are surrounded by different shapes and colours. From the graphics and structures found within urban environments to the repetitive patterns that construct organic material at a cellular level, the selected designer-makers have drawn on a variety of sources to create exciting geometric designs in jewellery, ceramics, and textiles. The range of new, bright, and bold designs start at just TBC, making them perfect for summer and great for those seeking out more original gifts and accessories for the wedding season.

Yasmin Boyle, NAWM Prize Winner

Yasmin was awarded this exhibition as a prize during the New Art West Midlands exhibition 2017. Her sculptures explore gender stereotypes, addressing the binaries of ‘male’ and ‘female’.

Geoff Hodgson, Photographic Prize 2017 Winner

Geoff was awarded this exhibition as a prize during the RBSA Photographic Prize 2017. His series explores the Duddeston Viaduct, which was built by the Great Western Railway Company across Digbeth in the Nineteenth Century.

An interesting and thoughtful collection of self-portraits in oil, ink, and print that explore different thoughts and ideas about the physical and emotional effects of the menopause.

Usha’s ceramics are inspired by landscapes, especially rock formations of many countries. The pots are hand built and represent 3D paintings, with surface decoration applied in layers. The results can be unpredictable and challenging.

Ann’s representation of flowers have a sense of emotional depth, which she considers to be representational of each flower. She considers her works to be like portraits, because of their individualism.

RBSA Next Wave 2018

The Next Wave project began in 2014 as an exciting new venture for the RBSA. The project aimed to stage an exhibition of work by emerging and early-career artists that would add to the variety of the RBSA Gallery’s exhibition programme. It also aimed to support and promote the exhibitors to help them develop their career in the arts sector. Following the success of Next Wave 2014, the RBSA made it a biennial project so that the aims could be developed and continued.

BSL is a recognised language that is used by approximately 145,000 throughout the UK. This workshop will introduce key skills and signs that are useful in everyday interactions with members of the Deaf community, such as finger-spelling and common phrases. Tanvir is profoundly Deaf and is a Senior Campaigner for Action on Hearing Loss with years of experience in promoting BSL. He uses a combination of slides, handouts, and demonstrations to lead his workshops in a friendly and informal manner. He is kindly delivering this session at a lower cost to help make it as accessible as possible for those on a lower budget.
