The Museum and Art Gallery is set in the beautiful Riversley Park and has three galleries which house regularly changing temporary and touring art exhibitions. We also have galleries devoted to permanent displays of local author George Eliot, local history and our fine art collection.

Action Man

Palitoy : The Toys that shaped our childhoods.

The Palitoy Exhibition is on tour from Leicestershire Museums. It tells the story of the Palitoy Firm and the toys it introduced to the world including Action Man and Tiny Tears. Also included are many other child hood favourites including those inspired by the film Star Wars. The exhibition incorporates opportunities for visitors to leave their own memories and to play board games. Bring your little ones to see the toys you used to play with.

The Work exhibition features items from the museum’s art and photography session to look at the changing nature of work across the borough. The display also includes a specially commissioned film which presents the memories of workers from well known local companies like Sterling Metals, Abbey Hosiery and Clear Hooters. Visitors of all ages will enjoy joining our factory production line to make their own hooter.

Family Event Day : Tool making for Re-enactments

  • 6 June 2015 11am-4pm

Guarderobe demonstrate the skills which go into creating the clothes and accessories which they use in their re-enactments. They will demonstrate techniques involved in making the items which they use to portray from Roman times to the First World War. Younger visitors can make a paper axe.
