The Herbert has extensive and wide ranging collections which are grouped under four broad headings:
• Visual Arts
• Social and Industrial History
• Archaeology
• Natural History

The museum collections contain hundreds of thousands of items ranging from tiny insects to large industrial machinery like a jacquard loom, and from everyday household objects to fine paintings by important artists.

Fearsome Craftsmen: Discover The Artistry Of The Viking World

Making the perilous journey through the crashing waves of the North Sea, the bloody and brutal Viking invasions of Britain are legendary
– but what did they do while they were here?

Step back in time and discover the 1,000 year old human innovations that built a vast empire and a flood of intercontinental migration spanning northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the coasts of Africa and even America.

Learn more about the people who settled in Britain from excavated skeletons, and explore the Norse myths and legends passed down through generations in our unique family friendly Viking settlement. See real examples of Viking crafts including intricate metalwork, and a replica 15ft
fishing boat, decorated with designs which reveal the true creative spirit of the Viking Age.

Creative Car Factory – Family Workshops

Join us in our Creative Car Factory this summer and be a real life ‘Cartist’. Create your very own model, and help us build a full size ‘car’ inspired by our Cartists exhibition. Every week, our workshop will focus on a different stage of car manufacture from incredible ideas, all the way through to the fabulous finishes. Join us every week to explore all stages and build your very own model car or join us for one of the workshops to make one car part to take home.

A Really Roman Summer

Explore the unique Lunt Roman Fort this summer; stand on the ramparts, imagine yourself training horses in the Gyrus, and drop in to our fantastic Roman themed workshops. Play Roman games, dig in our ‘archaeological finds’ sandpit or create your own helmet, shield or soldier in a weekly themed workshops.
