The Herbert has extensive and wide ranging collections which are grouped under four broad headings:
• Visual Arts
• Social and Industrial History
• Archaeology
• Natural History

The museum collections contain hundreds of thousands of items ranging from tiny insects to large industrial machinery like a jacquard loom, and from everyday household objects to fine paintings by important artists.

Made in the Middle

Made in the Middle is a recurring touring exhibition highlighting some of the best contemporary craft and applied art from the Midlands. Featuring both recent graduates and makers with established reputations, there is a wealth of innovative creativity on display, including ceramics, jewellery, metalwork and textiles.

Selected by an expert panel through open entry, the exhibition reflects the latest developments and trends in craft. The eighth in the series, the exhibition provides a great opportunity to purchase and commission work from some of the best makers in the region.

This exhibition was developed in partnership with Craftspace. Made in the Middle 2016 is part of Craftspace’s 30th anniversary programme.

Discover the many galleries around the museum with your little ones as a member of our learning team leads you into a world of imagination through popular stories and nursery rhymes. Using sensory based objects, movement, sound and Makaton the sessions will create a stimulating experience for your children. The sessions alternate between storytelling and nursery rhymes with stories include childhood favourites The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Dear Zoo, Mr Grumpy’s Motor Car, plus many more.
*The sessions are based in a different gallery each week, so please ask at reception upon arrival to find out which gallery the session will be taking place in.

11am - 11.30am (Childminders' session) Our childminder session is an opportunity for you to meet with other child care providers, increases your children’s social experiences, and we will offer additional support if needed during the session to help you when caring for multiple children.

Workshop: You Can’t Wear That!

The things that some see as rubbish can often be turned into something beautiful if you have the right skills.
Using traditional techniques, Dauvit Alexander will show you how to turn the bits and bobs most would throw away into pieces of jewellery.
