THE CHANGING FACE OF WALSALL, our permanent local history gallery celebrates the history of our Borough and explores its development. Visitors can find out about local industries, discover weird and wonderful artefacts, and learn more about our local celebrities!
We also have an exciting programme of lively activities for children and adults, meaning everyone can engage with their heritage.

Walsall's Police Force
A display showcasing a recent donation to Walsall Museum of items relating to Walsall Police Force. Items on show include a rare wooden truncheon used by a Special Constable during the First World War, a pair of screw handcuffs made by Hiatts of Birmingham, a number of badges and buttons from the uniforms of Walsall policemen, and a set of police whistles, one of which is stamped ‘Walsall Police.’
The display can be seen in The Changing Face of Walsall gallery on the first floor of the Central Library and Museum building.

Sister Dora's Legacy: Celebrating Achievement and Diversity in Walsall
A community display focusing on the Mayor's Civic Awards and the achievements of one of the first winners, Walsall's Black Reading Group. The Black Reading Group is a multi-cultural group which meets regularly to read and discuss Black authors. In 2005 the group published ‘Dis n Dat’, a collection of creative writing by the group.
The Civic Awards honour local people who have made outstanding contributions to life in the borough. Sister Dora is the figurehead for the awards in recognition of her dedication to the people of Walsall during her time as a nurse here in the 19th century.

Let's Dance...
A display of party frocks from the 1930s to the 2000s. Sparkly, spangly outfits for the festive season! Featuring a selection of historic dresses from the Museum's costume collection, ranging from a full length gown from the 1930s to a gold sequined number from recent years.

Surgical Instruments from the 1930s to the 1960s
If you’re squeamish look away now, the latest display at Walsall Museum is not for the faint hearted! The current display in our Sister Dora Discovery Box contains many of the instruments the well-equipped hospital surgeon needs to carry out a range of operations – from a special saw for cutting through bone in amputations to pairs of retractors for holding opening a wound during an operation. The instruments all date from the 1930s to the 1960s and are on loan to the Museum from Mr and Mrs Neil Portman of West Bromwich.

Public Talk - Family History Research
An exploration of how you can build your family tree, focusing on how you can find out where your ancestors worked and what jobs they did. Senior Archivist and Local Studies Officer Ruth Vyse of Walsall Local History Centre will be looking at how you can carry out family history research and the resources available at the Local History Centre which can help you. Children's Spring Half-Term Craft Drop-In
Brighten up the winter months by making an exotic hanging bird to bring a ray of sunshine at home. Have fun and try out your craft skills!

Public Talk - An Introduction to Inn Signs
A talk exploring the origins of inn signs and some of the themes found on them, including heraldry, religion and famous people. Pictorial inn signs have been part of the landscape since the Middle Ages but how did they come about? David Cole of the Inn Sign Society talks us through their history with 50 slides of inn signs. This is part of a regular series of public talks on local history, costume history and related subjects. Includes an opportunity to ask questions.
