The Royal Pump Rooms opened in summer 1814; it was the first and only bath house in the fashionable area of the town, north of the river Leam. From then until the 1990s, spa and medical treatments were provided in the building. The Royal Pump Rooms also functioned as a centre for entertainments in the town.
