Discover art, archaeology, natural history and geology. With a busy programme of exhibitions and events, we have something to amaze everyone, whatever your interest – and admission is free!
Although not the oldest of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales’s buildings, this is the first location of National Museum Wales, officially opened in 1927.
Situated in the heart of Cardiff’s elegant civic centre, today it houses Wales’s national archaeology, art, geology and natural history collections, as well as major touring and temporary exhibitions.
Discover the secrets of our ancestors from the Neanderthals a quarter of a million years ago in the Archaeology gallery, Origins: in search of early Wales. Everyday objects and beautiful artefacts tell the stories of people in Wales and explore our links with the past.
The Art collection at National Museum Cardiff is one of Europe's finest. See five hundred years of magnificent paintings, drawings, sculpture, silver and ceramics from Wales and across the world, including one of Europe's best collections of Impressionist works.
Take an amazing journey in Evolution of Wales from the very beginning of time to the present day. The story begins in space with the Big Bang and takes you on a 4,600 million-year journey, bringing you face to face with dinosaurs and woolly mammoths. Find out how life evolved in Wales and which dinosaurs roamed the land.
Witness the diverse Natural History of Wales on an expedition which begins at the seashore and ends in the mountains. Experience some of the unique environments that make Wales home to over 900 Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

John Piper: The Mountains of Wales
Showcasing a private collection of works by John Piper. His dramatic depictions of the mountains of north Wales provide the subject of this exhibition.
Artist in Focus: David Jones - Paintings and Watercolours
David Jones (1985-1974): Paintings and Watercolours. A selection of work from our outstanding collection of works by the artist.
David Jones occupies a unique place in twentieth-century British art, and is often called the greatest painter-poet since William Blake.
Amgueddfa Cymru has the principal public collection of Jones’s work, but as he worked primarily in watercolour this is not on permanent display.
This exhibition focuses on his work in that medium, and will be followed by another which examines his engravings, book illustrations, and inscriptions.

Archaeopteryx
Was Archaeopteryx a bird or a dinosaur? So far only 10 specimens have ever been found (plus one isolated feather), all from the same area of Germany.
Now one of these original specimens known as “The Phantom” (because it was known about but never seen) will be on display in the UK for the first time.
This is an exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of the discovery of Archaeopteryx, the famous feathered fossil known as the ‘missing-link’ between dinosaurs and birds.

Origins Lunchtime Talk: Monmouth: Extraordinary potters
From the middle of the 13th century until around the middle of the 14th century small-time potters in Monmouth, working with the simplest of kilns, were producing artwork which would match any others in Britain. It may have been a talented family dynasty which began with the most complex rouletting on pottery of the Middle Ages and who were later producing ornate jugs and unique horned devil louvers, unmatched elsewhere. The final potters vanish around the time of the Black Death when their highly distinctive wares are found in the final layers of abandoned houses in and around Monmouth.
