Swansea's Glynn Vivian Art Gallery contains traditional and modern art, including sculpture and installations. These are housed in the handsome classic Italian-style gallery building, and complement the exhibitions in the modern wing, which brings the work of today's artists alive with its sharp, contemporary overview of the arts.

A broad spectrum of visual arts from the original bequest of Richard Glynn Vivian (1835-1910) which includes work by Old Masters as well as an international collection of porcelain and Swansea china. The 20th Century is also well represented with modern painting and sculpture by Hepworth, Nicholson, Nash alongside Welsh artists such as Ceri Richards, Gwen John and Augustus John.

Dylan Thomas Notebooks

  • 31 May — 31 August 2014 *on now

These exceptional items are accompanied by letters which refer to the poems and the processes involved in their writing, and a self-portrait Dylan drew on the back of a letter to his friend, Pamela Hansford Johnson.

The Notebooks and letters are on loan from State University of New York at Buffalo, and exhibited in partnership with the National Library of Wales, and complemented by drawings of his friends from the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery Collection. The exhibition is curated as part of Swansea Council’s year-long Dylan Thomas 2014 Festival.

Artist Talk: Rachel Tresize

Rachel won the Dylan Thomas Prize in 2006 and her first full length play, Tonypandemonium, was staged by National Theatre Wales in autumn 2013 and won ‘Best Production in the English Language’ at the Theatre Critics of Wales Awards in early 2014.

As part of the Glynn Vivian Road Show, we want you to share your own collection with us – whether its toys, football memorabilia, vinyl records, stamps or badges – whatever it is that you collect, we would like to invite you to bring along your collection and talk to us about your treasures.

You will also get the chance to select works of art from the Gallery’s collection which will be reproduced and put on display in community centres and selected sites throughout the city centre.

Come along to a summer Glynn Vivian Road Show and meet our Gallery team for a fun afternoon of activities.

The Art Party!

Part documentary, part road movie and part political fantasy, The Art Party! feature film captures the spirit of the Scarborough conference held in November 2013, championing the importance of art and its place in education and modern politics.

A kaleidoscopic mix of performance, artist interviews and imagined scenes, The Art Party! is the latest in a line of collaborations between director Tim Newton and Bob and Roberta Smith.

For the film screening, Black Kettle Collective will be hosting an event in Castle Square. Come along and P-A-R-T-Y!

The Art Party! is a Tim Newton and Bob and Roberta Smith production, in association with Crescent Arts, ACE Grants for the Arts, The Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture & Design and distributed by Cornerhouse Artist Film.
