Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery is funded and administered by Powys County Council. First established in 1928 by the Brecknock Society, it occupies an historic building at the heart of an outstandingly attractive area with a rich and varied past.

In July 2013, the 'Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery: Connecting Communities and Collections' project was awarded £2.5 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the restoration of the Old Shire Hall and Assize Court building, the redisplay and reinterpretation of the collections, the removal of the 1974 intrusive floors and the opening up of the original cells for the first time. The project also supports the expansion of the volunteer scheme and the development of new education spaces and programmes. The project will link in with the development of a new town Library, sharing new facilities with the redeveloped Museum.

The Museum is currently closed to visitors apart from occasional one day openings and is currently scheduled to re-open fully in 2016. Please see the website link (right) for details of occasional open days and updates on the redevelopment.
