National Maritime Museum announces adult learning programme, May - August 2010

News: If you teach History, or have any interest in historic ships and seafaring, don't miss the upcoming evening adult events from historic Greenwich National Maritime Museum (NMM).

Boats That Built Britain lecture series
The National Maritime Museum has paired up with National Historic Ships for this series of lectures.

From May 2010, the National Maritime Museum is opening a new exhibition and hosting a lecture series to showcase the major themes being covered by the new BBC Four series, Boats that Built Britain, part of the channel's Sea Fever season.

The lectures will tell the story of maritime Britain through voyages of discovery, the Royal Navy, the golden age of sail, the growth of shipping and industry through to World War Two. Most of these lectures are during the day, so we've referenced the one evening event - please see below.

Sea Fever Tuesday May 11 2010, 7pm-9pm, £8/£6
Why not join a screening of highlights from the flagship programme of BBC Four's Sea Fever season with an opportunity for questions and conversation with the film-makers and some of the contributors?

Sea Fever uses home movies and amateur films to tell the story of our relationship with the sea in the 20th century.

Boats that Built Britain, Thursday May 20 2010, 7pm-8.30pm, £8/£6
Tom Cunliffe, presenter of BBC Four's Boats That Built Britain, explores how boats have helped shape our history following the key themes of the series, from square-riggers to schooners, pilot boats, fishing luggers, landing craft and more. (Part of the Boats that Built Britain lecture series).

1001 Inventions - Discover the Muslim Heritage in our World
Tuesday July 13 2010, 7pm-8.30pm, £8/£6

Following the success of the Science Museum's 1001 Inventions exhibition, Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani, the Chairman of the Board for Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation, will chart the advancement of Muslim civilisation.

Brunel: The Great Engineer, Tuesday August 10 2010, 7pm-8.30pm, £8/£6
Tim Bryan, Head of Collections and Interpretation at the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, will talk about the importance of Brunel, his impact and legacy.

National Historic Ships also has a 2010 Photography competition for you and your pupils.
