Museums, galleries and science centres, to name just a few non-school settings, have a wealth of expertise to contribute to using informal environments for teaching and learning and they are increasingly involved in ITT (Initial Teacher Training).
Working with professionals in cultural and heritage venues outside the classroom allows you as a trainee teacher to develop your subject knowledge and gain fresh and new teaching and learning insights.
Check out the Teaching Outside the Classroom site which supports the development of placements for trainee teachers in settings other than schools.

The National Gallery supports creativity in the classroom.
From Abbott Hall Art Gallery to the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Forces memorial, in the Teaching Outside the Classroom Find A Setting section, you will discover a wide range of participating cultural venues.
To see examples of some great practice, why not peruse their case studies?
Other venues including the Science Museum, have a detailed ITT programme. There is also the Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme for cross-curricular primary and secondary Art and Design projects.
So, if you know about a site that you’d like to contact for further information, and it’s not on the Teaching Outside the Classroom list, you can try contacting them direct. Culture24’s Places to Go section has a map to help you with your search.
