St George's Day, across the UK, April 23 2009

Think of St George and a dragon-fighting, damsel-in-distress-saving hero may come to mind. But apparently, only one in five of us know that St George's Day falls on April 23 each year, and a quarter don't even know he's England’s patron saint.

If you'd like to help redress the balance, there's some useful background information about St George on our kids' site, Show Me.

Museums, galleries and heritage sites around the country will be celebrating England's national day, including English Heritage, who have a fantastic line-up of St George-related events for your knight-mad pupils.

Their weekend of celebrations kick off at Wrest Park, which holds the biggest bash in the country.

The Royal Armouries in Leeds are having a Sword of Honour Jousting Tournament

Check out local venues in our Places to Go section for more events near you…and don't forget the red rose in your buttonhole on April 23.
