Trenches videoconferencing or virtual classroom with The National Archives

Here’s a great one hour videoconference/virtual classroom workshop session, from The National Archives, specially suitable for your year 9 pupils, with QCA links to Unit 18 - Hot war, Cold war: why did the major twentieth-century conflicts affect so many people? – and it’s free too.

Your students can interact with Private Henry Fairhurst from a Pals Battalion (played by a costumed actor) as he shares his experiences of life in the trenches. Original documents from The National Archives, including war diaries and trench maps, are used as source evidence for his story.

In advance of the videoconferencing session, you’ll get a pack of preparation materials with suggestions for questions for Pte Fairhurst as well as copies of his documents. After the workshop, students can then complete a profile of Pte Fairhurst and assess the source material used.
