Example sequence of activities
1. Provide learners with on-screen or printed off copies of the pirate-related broadsides available in the digital collection of the National Library of Scotland. Ask learners to use the resources to put together a 'day in the life of a pirate' .
2. Investigate the similarities and differences between broadsheets and modern news publications, including tabloid newspapers, broadsheets and news websites.
3. Study the ingredients of a ballad by reading and annotating the ballads in the pirate-related broadsides.
4. Ask learners to write their own ballad about a pirate event, drawing on their research from the broadsides and other sources in the school library or on the internet, such as the National Maritime Museum.
Use the research undertaken to analyse the historical accuracy of the portrayal of pirates in the 2003 film, 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.
