A Victorian Workroom
The scene depicts a Victorian workroom. Very often these were no more than a cramped attic room, and the girls working there had to pay for their apprenticeship, and only received board and lodging in return.,
An Edwardian Drawing Room at Fairlynch
The displays in the Costume Room are changed every year after careful choice from the Fairlynch Costume collection, which is one of the finest in the South West. The oldest costumes in our possession date from as early as 1700, and not only do we have ladies&rsquo
dresses, but also military uniforms and children&rsquo
s clothes, together with the relevant accessories. , Our main display this year, is an Edwardian drawing room, where the ladies of the house are enjoying some music around the piano having left the gentlemen to their &ldquo
port and cigars&rdquo
., In one of the two glass cabinets you will find a selection of ladies&rsquo
evening shoes, and in the other cabinet there is a display of &ldquo
Boudoir caps&rdquo
, which are caps the ladies wore to protect their hair whilst getting dressed., Also on show are some children&rsquo
s clothes from Mrs Lennox&rsquo
s collection of clothes with a royal connection. Mrs Lennox inherited these clothes from two of her great aunts who were nannies to Queen Victoria&rsquo
s and Queen Alexandra&rsquo
s children., In the dressing room we have items from our &ldquo
study collection&rdquo
, which can be handled for study purposes. The scene depicts a Victorian workroom. Very often these were no more than a cramped attic room, and the girls working there had to pay for their apprenticeship, and only received board and lodging in return.,
Budleigh Salterton Venture Art Group
