The Museum is housed in a former woollen mill within the Shires shopping centre. Displays tell the history of the woollen industry, Trowbridge town and its people. Working looms are demonstrated on Saturdays and cloth is still produced on site. There are plenty of hands-on interactives, a children's trail and a mouse hunt. There are also regular temporary exhibitions and childrens holiday activities

Trowbridge Local History Website and Educational Resource

A wonderful new resource for primary schools, the local history website provides an exciting view into Trowbridge's past. Themed around the museum's educational sessions the website uses photographs of museum objects as well images from the the museum's collections,video clips and audio clips. The resource bank will be updated in response to teachers requests making the site flexible and adaptable.

Child Labour in the Victorian Mill

This is an authentic historical experience for children, who will be asked to come dressed up and in role as Victorian factory workers. They will learn how wool was processed, investigate the tools of the trade and find out about the rules and regulations controlling a factory child's life. They will learn the basics of weaving by using card looms and through a demonstration of a foot loom.

Experience writing and arithmetic as they should be taught, practice handwriting, deportment, etiquette and elocution in an historical setting. This is an authentic recreation of the past so participants are are asked to come in role as Victorian schoolchildren.

Weaving with Wool

Children learn about using wool to produce woven cloth. They can practise weaving on card looms and see a large foot loom in action as well as look at cloth designs and have a go at creating their own patterns. There is an interactive story in which each child plays a character and a tour of the museum examining how spinning and weaving machinery developed. (Each activity lasts for 20mins and the session can be adapted for KS1 and KS2)

World War 2 at Home

Come in costume as evacuees and learn how the War affected children's lives. Can they identify the different wartime characters from the authentic and replica objects? Plenty of interesting objects to handle as well as a chance to design your own air raid shelter.
