Re-enactors from The Woodvilles

The Woodvilles - 15th Century Camp

18 May 2013 *on now

The past comes to life at Lydiard Park as The Woodvilles set up camp on the lawn with living history demonstrations of medieval artillery, fashion, crafts, cooking, arms and armour. It's free for visitors to wander around the camp and chat to the costumed re-enactors.

During the day there will be the chance to find out more about the arms and armour used on a War of the Roses battlefield, see the costumes worn by soldiers and civilians and to discover the medical practices of the late medieval period.

Inside the walled garden, there will also be two thrilling artillery displays each day at 1pm and 4pm as members of the Woodville household demonstrate their archery skills. Normal entry charge to the walled garden will apply - £1.85 adult, £1 child.

The Woodvilles are a living history and battle re-enactment group covering the "Wars of the Roses" period. Founded in Hampshire in the early 1990s, the group draws members from all over the UK, performing at special events at historic sites across the country - this is their second visit to Lydiard Park.

The group portray life in a 15th century military camp, from the point that the display opens to the point that the visitor leaves, the camp remains authentic from the clothing worn by the members and the food eaten to the activities and crafts on display.

Visitors to Lydiard Park will be able to learn a lot about how life was lived in the past and have fun interacting with the camp members. It's a chance to travel back in time to the turbulent times of the Wars of the Roses when the knights, ladies and soldiers of the 15th century had to decide whether to take up the White Rose of York or the Red Rose of Lancaster in a dynastic struggle for the English Crown.
