Featuring a selection of watercolour works from 21 British artists, this exhibition demonstrates the 21st century approach to what has long been heralded as a quintessentially British format. Artists include Susie Hamilton, James Faure Walker, Melanie Russell, Hannah Maybank, Steven Walker, Claudia Bose and Julian Brown. The exhibition is on tour from Maidstone Museum.

Jeff Soan Chickens

Jeff Soan: Wooden Creatures

  • 7 May — 30 June 2016

Jeff is best known for his articulating wooden creatures which he has been creating since 1987. His work reflects equally a love of creatures, great and small, and a love of wood, which produces remarkably sinuous and lifelike movement. Reclaimed wood is used extensively, from pallets and friends’ and neighbours’ prunings, and it is this found wood that often informs and shapes the work. This constantly varying source of timber helps keep the work fresh and alive.

Bertram Prance

Bertram Prance - Humour and Light

  • 9 April — 23 May 2016 *on now

Organised to welcome and celebrate the three exquisite pen and ink drawings by Bidefordian Bertram Prance, purchased and gifted to The Burton by the Friends of the Burton. This exhibition draws together the 9 works from the Estate of Bertram Prance and the newly accessioned drawings. Prance’s humorous drawings were always sought after by The Tatler, The Humourist and Passing Show. But it was his drawings published in “Punch” which established and assured his career. As fashions changed after the 2nd World War he became in demand as a book illustrator, particularly in advertising, but he was also a brilliant painter, a favourite subject being the sky and landscapes of North Devon.
