M Shed is an exciting and innovative new museum for Bristol that tells the story of our city.
Located on the historic dockside, Bristol’s flagship museum has been designed to retain the character of the former 1950s transit shed.
Three galleries reveal the fascinating story of the city and its unique place in the world. From prehistoric times to the present day, explore the history of Bristol through the objects and stories of the people who have made the city what it is today.
See amazing film and photographs, listen to moving personal stories, encounter rare and quirky objects and add your own memories of the city through the many interactive displays.
M Shed is a living museum, where stories of the past will spark discussions about the future- where YOU can contribute to the changing story of the city.

The museums were Designated in respect of outstanding collections relating to the City of Bristol, including topographical paintings and prints, maps and archaeological collections. The collections relating to the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries are particularly rich, and reflect the importance of Bristol in those centuries.

Historical Walk: Explore The Old City
Our 1.8 mile walk around the heart of Old Bristol spans a millennium of history. Our expert walk leaders will point out locations which saw the birth of the city, its growth and later decline as a major seaport and centre of commerce. They will highlight some of the events, people andplaces that earned the city a place in national history, culture and the arts.
The walk is at a gentle pace on level terrain and is suitable forparticipants at all levels of physical ability.

Volunteer guides will meet you at M Shed information desk 5-10 minutes before the walk is due to begin. There will be breaks at key locations where the volunteers will point out sites of key interest and talk about their significance. Tours are not suitable for wheelchair users.

Although the routes are not strenuous, please be aware that surfaces may be uneven and could be slippery when wet. We strongly recommend that you dress appropriately for the weather with warm/waterproof clothing and comfortable footwear.

Seminar: Bristol suffragists on the eve of war (or 1912-14)
UWE Regional History Centre, in association with M Shed brings you a series of free seminars. Speaker: June Hannam is Professor Emeritus at UWE, Bristol. Suffrage campaigning in the years just prior to the outbreak of WW1 is best known for an escalation of militancy and the arrest and forcible feeding of suffragettes. The activities of non militant suffragists tend to be overlooked, but they too stepped up their campaign- they organised demonstrations, including the 1913 Pilgrimage, made a new political alliance with the Labour Party and sought to educate women in the rights and duties of citizenship. This paper will examine how Bristol suffragists responded to this new context. Who participated in the Pilgramage and how did the local movement deal with the LP alliance and the 1913 bye- election ? What was their relationship with the militant movement? The diverse activities and political choices of Bristol suffragists in the war and post war years will also be considered.

Historical Walk: Exploring Redcliffe
Venture on our guided walk into the once-autonomous township of Redcliffe, where you will find some of the most impressive remains of historical Bristol - from large-scale buildings, such as St. Mary Redcliffe church and Temple Meads railway station, to tucked-away gems, such as the Hermit's Cave and the remains of the city's Water Gate. Our guides will reveal how this fascinating and often overlooked area played a vital role in establishing Bristol's reputation as a world-class city.

“Senseless outrages against property”: suffragette militancy and women’s right to vote
Did suffragette militancy help or hinder the women’s campaign for the right to vote? Was their arson and bombing campaign justified? And what relevance does the militants’ example have for feminist activists today?
Join June Hannam, Professor Emeritus at the University of the West of England; Lois Bibbings, Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Bristol; Dawn Dyer of the Local Studies Team at Bristol Central Library; and local author Lucienne Boyce to discuss the effectiveness and ethics of suffragette militancy in the campaign for women’s right to vote.

Historical Walk: Exploring Redcliffe
Venture on our guided walk into the once-autonomous township of Redcliffe, where you will find some of the most impressive remains of historical Bristol - from large-scale buildings, such as St. Mary Redcliffe church and Temple Meads railway station, to tucked-away gems, such as the Hermit's Cave and the remains of the city's Water Gate. Our guides will reveal how this fascinating and often overlooked area played a vital role in establishing Bristol's reputation as a world-class city.
The walk is at a gentle pace and suitable for participants at all levels of physical ability.
Route M Shed - Bathurst Basin - Temple Meads - Redcliff Back - M Shed

Volunteer guides will meet you at M Shed information desk 5-10 minutes before the walk is due to begin. There will be breaks at key locations where the volunteers will point out sites of key interest and talk about their significance. Tours are not suitable for wheelchair users.

Sandy Nairne: The Photographic Portrait Prize

Viewing in sequence the very large number of photographic portraits submitted to the competition is an intense experience. More than 5,000 actual prints from around the world are presented anonymously without any knowledge of the photographer’s identity, from which only 60 are selected.

Historical novelist Julian Stockwin, Bristol author Lucienne Boyce, historian Adrian Tinniswood and Dr Steve Poole of the University of the West of England offer advice on researching Bristol’s maritime past. This open discussion will be of interest to writers and readers of historical fiction and anyone with a passion for Bristol’s maritime past.

John Tonks: The Empire Project

In conversation with Jon Tonks, a featured photographer from Bath.
Jon travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to document four overseas territories of the United Kingdom: Ascension Island, St. Helena, Tristan Da Cunha and the Falkland Islands. These are among the last vestiges of the British Empire, which, at the height of its power and breadth, was the empire ‘on which the sun never sets.’ Giving an insight into life in these remote places, this event coincides with the launch of his first book that documents the project.
