A new campaign is appealing for people to make donations to enable up to 30,000 school children a year to enjoy a range of activities and learning resources at the Great North Museum: Hancock.

The museum is set to become a world-class attraction when it opens its doors in April 2009 and will celebrate the evolution of our planet, featuring artefacts from ancient Egypt and Greece.

The museum will also feature a range of displays, including a large-scale, interactive model of Hadrian’s Wall and a life-size T-Rex dinosaur skeleton.

Be Part Of It is a new initiative, encouraging donations from the public, who in return, will have their names permanently listed on the wall of the museum.

Olympic gold medal winner, Jonathan Edwards, is proud to be the Patron of the campaign, explaining: “The Great North Museum: Hancock reflects everything that is great about our region… it has something for everyone.”

With Christmas approaching, the museum suggests a novel gift idea would be to make a donation on behalf of a family member and put their name forward for inclusion in the museum. The staff are also keen to hear donors’ views on the new Museum, and will include these stories on the museum website.

The £26 million museum is the North East’s newest attraction, and money donated will help children engage with education programmes at all key stages. The programmes will include storytellers, musicians, costumed interpreters, and will provide great opportunities for family learning.

Alec Coles, Director of Tyne & Wear Museums, explains: “Supporting this campaign is a great way for people in the region to inspire the children and young people upon whom the future of the North East depends.”
