Culture24 is one of a quartet of UK institutions recognised with a Best of the Web award at this year’s Museums and the Web conference in Denver, USA.

The MLA-funded organisation, which has promoted UK museums, galleries, heritage sites and archives through its websites for ten years, was rewarded with a Long Lived Award in recognition of its long-term commitment to "an initially excellent online initiative".

Other British Institutions rewarded at the international conference included the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, which scooped the Innovative Award for its Solar Storm Watch website; the Victoria and Albert Museum's collections search, which was given the Research Award, and Dulwich Picture Gallery, which won the Best Small Museum Award for their community-focussed web project Dulwich on View.

Culture24's Long Lived Award is designed to "celebrate websites that year-over-year continue to be useful and serve their communities". It is also designed to recognise "the longevity and the power and effectiveness of sustained engagement".

Among a range of merits judges were looking for continued growth in available resources over time; reliably consistent quality in new content; sustained use and engagement with site visitors and an ongoing commitment to long-term site development and use.

The innovative Award went to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

"Ten years is a long time to be around in the world of the web, but this recognises the commitment of the small team working to make Culture24 a success," said Director Jane Finnis, who was at the ceremony in Denver on Friday to pick up the Award.

"It also, of course, reflects the diversity and richness of UK culture. I'm particularly pleased as we were up against a crop of innovative websites."
