The Museums Libraries and Archives council has announced that 26 of England’s historic collections will share nearly £1.5 million from the MLA’s new Designation Development Fund.
Individual projects will receive between £20,000 and £100,000 and were whittled down from a long list of 53 projects.
"Great collections are found in museums, libraries and archives across England. Our Designation programme honours the very best and sets the bar high," said MLA Chief Executive Roy Clare.
"We encourage keepers to become better sharers and we also reward examples of full-blooded engagement with the public.
"It is vital that the voices of people of all backgrounds are heard alongside the measured tones of scholarship. The MLA has made it a priority to advocate that collections are enjoyed widely today and also preserved for future generations.
"Cash can go a long way, but open-minded application of these principles can deliver a wider benefit."

Collections that stand to benefit are the Tank Museum in Bovington, Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum and the Museum of the Royal Academy of Music.
"We are very grateful for the work that collection holders have put in to preparing a variety of exciting ideas," added Clare.
"We congratulate those awarded grants and look forward to seeing the results in terms of an excited and positive public response."
