A controversial £61 million West Midlands arts centre has been handed a further £1.5 million in a fresh bid to stave off closure.

Sandwell Council has provided the funding to cover operating costs at West Bromwich’s The Public gallery, which opened two years late and nearly £12 million over budget in June.

Last weekend management at the venue revealed that their interactive gallery, poised to become one of the only exhibitions in the area to charge an entry fee, will not open to visitors until next year due to technical problems.

Business blueprints and the organisational structure of the centre will also be reviewed in the new year. The project was rescued by a £1.6 million government grant after going into administration in 2006.
