Lancaster Library has won the Love Libraries Award 2007, beating off competition from four rivals in a public vote.
The Award, run by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), celebrates the work libraries do to inspire under-25s. Lancaster Library won the youth vote with its innovative Get It Loud in Libraries project, which invites the latest bands to play exclusive gigs in the library, pulling in diverse crowds.
Roy Clare CBE, Chief Executive of the MLA Partnership, announced the results of the public vote at an Awards ceremony at the British Library on October 3.
“Congratulations to Lancaster Library and their innovative Get It Loud in Libraries project,” he said during the presentation.
“This competition has unlocked the enthusiasm of young people across England. Libraries are transforming as places where the young of all ages can come and engage with books and learning and do so in spaces that serve their community.”
Lancaster Library was awarded a trophy and £2,000 towards its ongoing project.
The other four projects that came in as highly commended finalists were Urban Art at Birmingham Central Library, Book Pushers at Derbyshire Libraries, Youth Forum at Grangetown Library and Variety Shows at Lambeth Libraries.
The five finalists were selected by a judging panel, with a public vote deciding the winner.
