David Barrie, the Director who presided over the purchase of more than 400,000 works during 17 years in charge of the leading UK art charity, The Art Fund, has been rewarded for his endeavour by becoming one of dozens of cultural figures recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.
Barrie (above) stepped down from his position in May 2009, having overseen nearly £55 million in funding grants. He can now insist his old friends address him as a CBE.
He joins an illustrious cast including National Theatre head Nicholas Hytner, Victoria and Albert Museum Director Mark Jones and Starship Enterprise star Patrick Stewart (all Knighted).
Controversial painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling, best known for creating London's A Conversation With Oscar Wilde bronze, also won a CBE, as did Barbican Centre Artistic Director Graham Sheffield.
