Hinton Ampner is one of the great gardens of the 20th century and is a masterpiece of design by Ralph Dutton, 8th and last Lord Sherborne. The 5ha (12 acre) garden unites a formal layout with varied and informal plantings in pastel shades. It also has magnificent vistas over parkland and rolling Hampshire countryside.

50th Anniversary of Hinton Ampner Re-opening
2013 is the 50th Anniversary of Hinton Ampner’s re-opening after the devastating fire in 1960. We invite you to join us in a weekend of celebrations to mark this event. To celebrate the re-opening Ralph Dutton held a garden party for all the people involved in the rebuilding. We will be hosting a week long party, the house will be dressed in 1960’s style, and there will be a family picnic on Saturday, a design competition for children and a new exhibition about the fire and the rebuild.
It promises to be a truly memorable weekend.

Afternoon tea became fashionable in the mid 19th Century, the Duchess of Bedford found it difficult to cope without eating between lunch and dinner. This became a habit, and once her friends were invited to join her, the tradition was born. After many decades absence, afternoon tea will once again be served on the terrace over looking Ralph Dutton’s stunning Landscape. Join us for an elegant afternoon, starting with a glass of English Sparkling wine, followed by a selection of specially prepared finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and preserves, and a variety of home made cakes and pastries and no afternoon tea would be complete without a choice of you own speciality tea served the tradition way.

Brass Band Music Evening in the Park
As the sun sets over Hinton Ampner’s stunning landscape, Alder Valley Brass will play from their wide-ranging repertoire, from classics and bid band swing to chart music from decades past and present An event the whole family can enjoy, bring a picnic and relax on the lawns or pre-book one of our deluxe picnic hampers (three courses including wine). There will also be a barbeque and a beer tent serving a selection of local beers from Itchen Valley Brewery. Feel free to bring picnic rugs, chairs and small tables.
